I have to talk about it... Chatroulette
Chatroulette is the new internet phenomenon, it's a webcam chat site which connects you at random to another user. So you never know who you are going to get next or what you might see... which obviously means the site is NSFW.
Chatroulette destroys two social rules of interaction, which is why I find it quite interesting.
Firstly, when you are bored of chatting you can click 'next' and you are connected to a new randomer, that's if they don't next you first. Wouldn't it be great if it were that easy to end a conversation in the real world? It's the online equivalent of turning your back on someone mid-conversation and walking off.
Have you seen the latest Ricky Gervais movie, 'The Invention Of Lying'? In a world where no one can lie, people are brutally honest and they don't hold back in telling you what they REALLY think of you and that's the second social rule that Chatroulette smashes.
In the real world you chat to the girl who looks a bit like a man, the old fat bearded guy or the kid with the odd shaped head out of politeness and you certainly wouldn't comment on their look.
On Chatroulette the random strangers you encounter will be brutally honest with you and for the first time ever you will be exposed to the thoughts that go through people's heads when they glance at you for the first time.
Un-suprisinly, about 90% of users on the site are male, which means most people don't want to talk to me anyway and next me instantly. Very few people want to chat at all, people are basically just clicking through looking for the next hot girl or the next freak.
It's easy to waste a couple of hours just sitting their clicking next but the novelty soon wears off. I just wish I had bumped in to the guy in the video below on the site, this video really brought a smile to my beak.
